Varyz for Codex

Last updated: 18 October 2026

Codex follows the instructions in your AGENTS.md files. Varyz works beside them. It gives Codex your vision, taste, and creative perspective: the preferences, project decisions and standards you would otherwise explain again in every session. Then you can hand over a task and step away.

01

What Varyz adds to Codex

  • A briefing before work starts. On the first prompt of a task, Varyz tells Codex how you work and what this project has already settled.
  • Answers instead of guesses. When Codex is about to assume something about you, such as a colour, a word, a tool or what to leave out, it asks Varyz first. If you already decided, it gets your answer.
  • Only new questions reach you. When a preference or fact is genuinely missing, the questions come together as short choices. In away mode they wait for your return.
  • A finish check. Before Codex reports that it is done, it goes through your checklist for that kind of work. Each item is done, or it explains why not.
  • Habits kept apart from one-offs. A rule you follow everywhere applies in every repository. A choice made for one project stays with that project.
02

How it connects

Varyz runs on your own computer. Connecting it to Codex needs no account and no API key.

  • A local MCP server. Codex talks to Varyz through the Model Context Protocol, over stdio on your machine.
  • Briefing hooks. Session start, prompt submit and stop hooks bring in the briefing and the finish check. Codex asks you to trust new hooks the first time, and that choice stays yours. Every hook fails open, and varyz hooks pause turns them off at any time.
  • A short section in AGENTS.md. Connecting adds one marked section to your Codex AGENTS.md. Everything you wrote stays as it is, the file is backed up first, and varyz uninstall takes the section out again.

How it learns from your Codex sessions

Varyz learns how you work from your past messages to AI agents, including your Codex sessions. Anything sensitive is skipped, and passwords and keys are removed. When Varyz runs the reader itself, it can use codex exec on your own plan and stops before your usage limits run low.

A rule with strong evidence, such as a correction you made more than once, takes effect as a trial rule, and agents are told you have not confirmed it yet. The rest waits for your review. You can review, replace or take back anything Varyz learned.

04

Use it with your AGENTS.md

Keep repository conventions in AGENTS.md, where every contributor's agent sees them. Varyz carries what is yours: your taste, your decisions and your standards, across every project. How Varyz compares with CLAUDE.md, AGENTS.md and Cursor rules.
