What this means for attribution, stated plainly because people ask:
Anyone may use, modify, sell and redistribute Varyz. What they may not do is
strip the copyright notice above. It must survive in the source they ship,
modified files must say that they were changed and when, and a version run as
a network service must offer its users the corresponding source.
Beyond that, and unusually for a GPL licence, section 7(b) of the AGPL permits
one supplementary term, and this project uses it. A single line —

— must be preserved and shown among the legal notices of anything built from
this work, including a modified version sold or hosted by somebody else. That
is a requirement to preserve a notice, not to advertise: nobody is obliged to
put the name on their packaging or their marketing.
"Varyz" and "varyzai" are the project's names, and section 7(e) withholds any
trademark grant to them. A fork is free to use the code and must choose its
own name.
The exact wording of both terms is in LICENSE.additional-terms.

Additional terms
Additional terms for Varyz, under section 7 of the GNU Affero General Public
License version 3
==========================================================================
Varyz is licensed under the GNU Affero General Public License, version 3, whose
verbatim text is in the file LICENSE. Section 7 of that License permits the
copyright holder to supplement it with a limited set of additional terms. Two
of those are exercised here. Nothing below adds a restriction of any other
kind, and nothing below limits any permission the License grants you.
1. Attribution, under section 7(b)
-----------------------------------
As permitted by section 7(b), you must preserve the following notice, and it
must appear in the Appropriate Legal Notices displayed by any work containing
the covered work, including any modified version:

This is a requirement to preserve and display an existing notice. It is not an
advertising clause: it does not require you to name varyzai in marketing,
packaging, documentation, a product name, or anywhere other than the legal
notices the software itself displays. One line is all that is asked, and it may
be shown wherever your product shows its other legal notices.
If your version of the work has no interactive user interface, this term is
satisfied by preserving the notice in the source and in any accompanying licence
or notice file, as section 5(d) of the License already contemplates.
2. Names and marks, under section 7(e)
---------------------------------------
As permitted by section 7(e), no rights are granted under trademark, service
mark, or trade name law to the names "Varyz" or "varyzai", to the varyzai
wordmark or logo, or to any name confusingly similar to them.
You may state truthfully that your work is based on, derived from, or compatible
with varyzai — indeed term 1 requires you to preserve that statement. You may
not use these names as, or as part of, the name of a modified version or of any
product or service you offer, and you may not use them to promote it. A fork is
free to take the code, and must choose its own name.
3. What this changes, and what it does not
-------------------------------------------
You may still use, study, modify, sell, resell, host and redistribute Varyz, for
any purpose, commercial purposes included. The License's own conditions still
apply unchanged: source must accompany what you distribute, modified files must
say that they were changed and when, and a modified version offered to users
over a network must offer them its corresponding source.
These additional terms are permitted supplements under section 7 and travel with
the work. Terms permitted by section 7(a) through 7(f) are not "further
restrictions" within the meaning of section 10, and may not be stripped from
this work as it is conveyed onward.
Contributions to this project are accepted under these same terms — the GNU
Affero General Public License version 3 together with this file — as recorded in
CONTRIBUTING.md.
4. A note on the trade-off, recorded honestly
----------------------------------------------
An attribution term of this kind is sometimes called a "badgeware" clause. It
is explicitly permitted by section 7 and does not make this work non-free or
GPL-incompatible. It does, however, make the licence non-standard: some
distributions and some corporate legal departments treat any AGPL work carrying
section 7 terms with more caution than plain AGPL. That cost was accepted
deliberately, in exchange for the author's attribution surviving resale.
This file has not been reviewed by qualified counsel. That review is a separate
open item.
