How to stop repeating yourself to your AI coding agent

Last updated: 18 October 2026

You told the agent last week that you want plain language in error messages, no new dependencies without asking, and a privacy page on every website. Today a new session starts and you find yourself typing the same things again. If that sounds familiar, this guide is for you.

01

Why it happens

Coding agents such as Claude Code, Codex and Cursor do have memory. They read instruction files, and some keep notes between sessions. The trouble is that your preferences come up in conversation, in the middle of real work, and most of them never make it into those places.

  • Corrections stay in the chat. You correct the agent, it fixes the code, and the reason behind the correction is left behind in that session.
  • Instruction files need you to write them. A rule only reaches CLAUDE.md or AGENTS.md if you stop and add it yourself.
  • Settled questions get asked again. When nothing written down covers a choice, the agent asks you, and the answer you give is rarely kept.
02

What you can do today, without any tool

  • Write down a rule the second time you say it. Saying something twice is the signal that it is a rule, not a one-off.
  • Keep one short personal file. Claude Code reads ~/.claude/CLAUDE.md in every project, and Codex reads its own AGENTS.md. Put your standing preferences there, not in every repository.
  • Write rules as rules. "Error messages use plain language, no codes" works better than a story about the time it went wrong.
  • Prune it. A long file full of stale rules is read less carefully than a short, current one.
03

Where that stops working

It works while your preferences fit on a page and you work with one agent. It gets harder when you use several agents, each with its own file, or when you have to remember to write things down in the middle of a task.

How Varyz helps

Varyz gives your agents your vision, taste, and creative perspective, so you can stop saying the same things.

  • It learns from what you already said. Varyz reads your past messages to AI agents, with sensitive content withheld, and picks up the rules you keep repeating. You review what it found.
  • It briefs the agent before work starts. The agent hears how you work and what this project has already settled.
  • It answers settled questions for you. When the agent is about to assume something about you, it asks Varyz first. Only new questions reach you.
  • A correction counts from now on. When you tell an agent "from now on" or "always", Varyz picks it up for your next task.

In our own benchmark, agents asked 42% fewer questions (14 instead of 24, for the same 8 questions across 3 projects). That is an internal result with a simulated owner and a small sample; see how Varyz is measured.
